Insights

Editorial standards.

How SPL Management researches, writes, reviews, and corrects the articles in Insights.

Purpose

General information, not advice.

Insights articles are written for owners and managers of licensed businesses. They explain how obligations tend to work and how to organize the work around them.

They are general information only. They are not legal, tax, or real estate advice, and SPL Management is not a law firm, accounting firm, or real estate brokerage. Rules vary by jurisdiction and change often, so confirm current requirements with the regulator or a qualified professional before acting.

Sources

Regulatory statements rest on primary sources.

  • A statement about a law, regulation, or regulator’s requirement is checked against a primary source: the regulator, the legislature, or an official agency page
  • Articles end with a Sources list linking to those official pages, with the date each was accessed
  • News and trade coverage may give context, but is not the basis for a regulatory statement
  • If a statement cannot be verified, it is removed, or the article tells you which kind of authority to confirm it with
  • Articles distinguish legal requirements, license conditions, internal policy, and recommended practice. Suggested cadences are suggestions, not requirements

Review dates

The “Last reviewed” date.

Articles show a “Last reviewed” date. It is the date we last checked the article’s regulatory statements against its sources.

It is not a promise that the article is current after that date. If you are relying on a rule, check the linked source for the current version.

What triggers a re-review

  • A change in a law, regulation, or official guidance on the article’s topic
  • A source page that moves, changes, or is withdrawn
  • A reader, client, or professional reporting a possible error
  • Periodic review of older articles

Corrections

How to report an error.

If you think an article is wrong or out of date, email [email protected] with the article, the statement, and a source if you have one.

  • We check the report against the primary source
  • If the article is wrong, we correct it and update its “Last reviewed” date
  • A correction that changes the meaning of the article is noted at the end of the article, with the date

Independence and examples

No sponsored content. Fiction is labeled.

  • We do not publish sponsored content
  • Articles are published under the SPL Management byline
  • Examples that use a business, people, locations, or dates are fictional, and are labeled as fictional where they appear
  • Fictional examples are not client stories and do not describe any real client’s results
