FAQ
Questions owners ask before working with us.
Straight answers about how SPL Management works, what we manage, and what to expect.
Working Together
What does SPL Management do?
We manage compliance, business operations, real estate and facilities, and licensing strategy for clients in highly regulated industries. You keep ownership and decision-making. We take responsibility for the operational and regulatory work being done consistently and on time.
Which industries do you work with?
We work with cannabis businesses, tobacco, vapor, and nicotine retailers, and other licensed operators whose daily work is shaped by strict regulation. If your industry fits that description, ask us whether we are a fit.
Where are you located, and where do you serve clients?
SPL Management is based in California. We work with clients across the United States and Canada, managing obligations in multiple jurisdictions from one place.
How is SPL different from a compliance consultant or a property manager?
A consultant is often engaged for a defined project, and a property manager typically handles the building rather than the license. SPL’s role is ongoing coordination across the agreed compliance, operations, and facilities tasks, with one team accountable for that work.
Do you provide legal advice?
No. SPL Management is not a law firm, and nothing we produce is legal advice. We manage the compliance and operational work: tracking obligations, preparing filings and records, maintaining procedures, and preparing for inspections. When a matter needs legal interpretation, a contract negotiated, or representation before a regulator or court, we bring in your counsel and support them with organized records and a clear timeline.
How do you work with our existing counsel and accountants?
Alongside them: your attorney, accountant, and licensed professionals keep their roles. We handle the day-to-day management that sits between them: the calendar, the records, the procedures, and the follow-through. In practice, that means your counsel gets complete documents instead of a scramble, and your accountant gets clean, current records at reporting time. If you do not have one of these relationships and need one, we will tell you.
Do you work on site or remotely?
Both, though most ongoing management, including calendar management, reporting, procedure updates, and regulatory monitoring, is done remotely. Site visits are scheduled for the Discover assessment, for standards reviews, for inspection preparation, and whenever a facility matter needs eyes on the ground. The mix is set in the proposal based on your locations and the services in scope.
Services
Can I engage SPL for just one service?
Yes. You can start with the area under the most strain and add other services later. Each service is scoped on its own and designed to connect with the others when you are ready.
Do you handle the day-to-day work or just oversee it?
We do the work. Managing a compliance calendar, maintaining procedures, coordinating with landlords and vendors, and preparing applications are all hands-on responsibilities we take on directly. Oversight without execution would not deliver the consistency our clients need.
Do you replace my internal staff?
No. We work alongside the people you have, giving them clear procedures and taking on the management load they were never hired to carry. Where a role is not covered, we tell you and can take on the management work that falls within our scope.
Can you help if we are expanding into a new state or province?
Yes. Licensing & Regulatory Strategy covers jurisdictional research, licensing roadmaps, application preparation, and preparation and tracking support for your team and counsel. Before you commit, we prepare a sourced overview of the requirements we identify and the questions to put to your counsel and the relevant authorities.
Process and Onboarding
What happens in the consultation?
We talk through your business, your regulatory obligations, and the areas causing the most strain. You will leave with a clear sense of whether SPL is a fit and what the first step would involve. There is no obligation.
How long does onboarding take?
The Discover step typically runs a few weeks, depending on the number of licenses, sites, and jurisdictions involved. Building the plan follows directly. Ongoing management begins as soon as the plan is agreed, and urgent items are prioritized from the start.
How will I know what is being done?
You receive reporting on a fixed schedule in a format we agree on together. Issues are raised as soon as we identify them, not held for the next report. You always have a single point of contact who can answer directly.
How is SPL compensated?
Ongoing management is priced as a fixed monthly fee, scoped to the services involved, the number of sites and jurisdictions, and the level of hands-on work required. One-time work, such as a licensing application or an initial assessment, is quoted as a project. We provide a written proposal after the consultation, so there are no surprises.
How long is the engagement, and can we stop?
Ongoing management runs on the terms stated in the written proposal. One-time work, such as a licensing application or an initial assessment, is a fixed-scope project with a defined end. If you decide to stop, we hand back a complete calendar, current procedures, and organized records, with an inventory of what was handed over and any outstanding items identified.
What happens if we are audited or inspected?
Contact us right away, and contact your counsel too if the visit may involve enforcement or legal exposure. If we manage your compliance, we maintain the records included in your scope and support your team’s preparation. Requests outside that scope, and anything legal, go to the appropriate responsible person. We help your team respond to requests, track any findings, and manage corrective actions through to closure, coordinating with your counsel where a finding raises a legal question. We cannot promise an inspection’s result, but we can make sure it is met with preparation instead of panic.
What do you need from us to get started?
Access to your licenses, permits, leases, current procedures, and recent inspection or audit records, and time with the people who carry the load today. We send a short records request once the engagement is signed; sensitive records are exchanged only after that. See your first 30 days. The Discover step works from what you have, so an incomplete file is a normal starting point, not a problem.
